Notes:

  • Trackhouse Racing driver Daniel Suárez finished ninth in Sunday’s 500-kilometer NASCAR Cup Series race at Phoenix Raceway in Avondale, Ariz.
  • Suárez wasn’t far behind most of the race, but a speeding penalty for going less than .02 mph over the limit sent him from the top-10 to 22nd with 90 laps to go.
  • He climbed back to 14th when he restarted the race with four laps to go after taking two tires.
  • Chastain and Suárez qualified 17th and 23rd on Saturday and started fast on Sunday. Both climbed into the top-12 late in the first stage before electing to pit in the closing laps and dropping to mid-pack.
  • Suárez fought handling issues and track position in Stage 2 but climbed to 15th before the stage ended.
  • Suárez started the third and final stage in 13th.
  • He used the new tires and aggressive driving to jump to seventh in the final laps before crossing the finish line in ninth.
  • The NASCAR Cup Series returns to action Sunday at Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton, Ga.

Daniel Suárez, driver of the No. 99 CommScope Chevrolet Camaro for Trackhouse Racing:

“It was a rollercoaster, up and down. I don’t feel that we had the greatest speed, probably top-15 somewhere in there. I made a mistake on pit road, the speeding penalty. I feel like it was just ups and downs. We were able to recover a little bit. Travis (Mack, crew chief) made a good call right there with the right side tires only and we were able to get a couple spots back. Overall, it was a good day for us and everyone at Trackhouse. Ross (Chastain) had a great run but we still need to learn and come back stronger.”
